Create craiglook the desktop application.
Allow the users to do the indexing and the application to query the craigslist site. That way your server isn't the one copying the craiglist data or indexing it.

Wow, this is a great idea. I have no problem with overloading CL servers. But I have no technical knowhow in this area. Who's got the balls and the brains?

@Joe H
"B) If all craiglook users were constantly indexing craigslist ads, wouldn't that quickly overload the craigslist servers?"It could be equivalent to a DDOS and shut em down. And if it does, that sounds like craigslist's fault for not allowing a single centralized source and making the users do it individually themselves.

Joe H is right. The way craiglook is currently designed it wouldn't work on home computers. Craigspal doesn't index craigslist. It just runs the search on each individual craigslist within your specified radius and returns the results as one.

Something like this exists, it's called craigpal. But it's not nearly as well done or usable as craiglook was. So I agree, 3 votes.

This sounds like a promising idea. I've never been active in the uservoice section of craiglook before, but I was shocked and disappointed to find that craiglook is no longer functioning.
My only question regarding your idea is this: A) can your average home computer handle this type of task? What kind of storage space and processing capacity would something like that take? B) If all craiglook users were constantly indexing craigslist ads, wouldn't that quickly overload the craigslist servers?
